What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on restoring movement, reducing pain, and improving physical function after injury, illness, or surgery. At Sportmed Max, our physiotherapists assess the root cause of your condition, then build a treatment plan specific to your body and your goals.

Physiotherapy is commonly sought for sports and athletic injuries, motor vehicle accident recovery, work-related injuries, back and neck pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It's also effective for patients managing complex cases that involve multiple physical or functional challenges.

Whether you're recovering from a specific injury or working to address a longer-standing issue, physiotherapy provides a structured, evidence-informed path to better movement.

How We Approach Physiotherapy at Sportmed Max

Sportmed Max was founded in Dieppe by Serge Arsenault PT, a physiotherapist since 2000 with training in FMS, DNS, and TPI. Our team brings together practitioners with deep specialization across a wide range of techniques, allowing us to match each patient to the right approach rather than applying one-size-fits-all treatment.

Our physiotherapists are trained in:

  • Dry needling (offered by Danielle, Julie, Renee, and Gabriel)
  • Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), used by Serge and Julie
  • Shockwave therapy for chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions

We also have practitioners experienced in concussion rehabilitation, WorkSafe NB and MVA case management, vestibular rehab, and functional capacity evaluations. Our team page has full bios and credentials for each clinician.

Ongoing Care

Most patients are seen for a series of appointments, with frequency determined by their condition and progress. Your physiotherapist will also provide home care guidance to support recovery between visits.

What Physiotherapy Can Help You Achieve

Patients at Sportmed Max commonly experience:

  • Reduced pain and improved mobility following musculoskeletal injuries or chronic conditions
  • Successful return to sport, work, or daily activity after MVA, surgery, or workplace injury
  • Clearer understanding of their condition and a structured, progressive plan for long-term function

Outcomes vary by condition, complexity, and individual response to treatment. Your physiotherapist will give you an honest assessment of what to expect at your initial appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Physiotherapy

No. In New Brunswick, you can book directly with a physiotherapist without a physician referral. Some insurance plans may require one for reimbursement purposes, so it's worth checking your coverage before your appointment.

This depends on your condition, how long the issue has been present, and how your body responds to treatment. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate after your initial assessment and will adjust the plan as you progress.

Yes. Nazaf Parekh PT and Harpreet Gill PT both accept WorkSafe NB and motor vehicle accident cases. These cases often involve more complex functional and administrative requirements, and both practitioners are experienced in managing them. Learn more on our MVA and WorkSafe NB page (link when live May 2026).

Most extended health benefit plans cover physiotherapy. Direct billing is available for many providers. We recommend confirming your coverage details directly with your insurer before your first visit.

Yes. Gabriel Doucet PT, returning April 2026, is a French-primary bilingual physiotherapist and one of our founding clinicians. Several other team members also communicate comfortably in French.
